Chessel Bay Local Nature Reserve is on the eastern bank of the river Itchen, south of Northam Bridge. It's the only remaining long stretch of undeveloped, natural shoreline, with mudflats providing feeding grounds for wading birds and wildfowl. Litter is a major environmental problem, mainly brought in by the tides, and Chessel Bay's Friends now organise a twice-yearly litterpick. PS The Ranger team are hoping to set up a Junior Rangers team based at the Common in 2025, for people aged 16-23. More details in due course on SCC social media and website.
