Galanthus nivalis
A familiar sight early in the year and beautiful harbinger of spring. Originating from mainland Europe, they're first recorded here in the early 16th century but may have arrived much earlier. They are now well established and are fairly common throughout the country.
Snowdrops grow in drifts in damp woodland conditions, but are frequently planted in parks, gardens and on roadside banks. They spread through bulb division rather than insect pollination, but are visited by early pollinators on a bright winter's day
